SIforAGE organizes the event “Towards A Europe for All Ages” at the European Parliament

30 May / 2016
  European Commission  |  .

SIforAGE project organized an event that took place on the 18th of April, 2016 on the premises of the European Parliament (Brussels, Belgium). SIforAGE organized an international one-day event entitled “Towards ‘A Europe for All Ages’” together with the European Parliament’s “Intergroup on Active Ageing, Intergenerational Solidarity and Families Policies” to discuss social innovation strategies and policy recommendations for active and healthy ageing policies at the European Union. The aim was to make a contribution on this debate by bringing together policy-makers from the European Parliament, some of the most relevant civil society representatives, as well as some of the most prominent international scholars researching on the field of ageing.

The main topics addressed in the event concerned the life-course perspective through the lens of the Active and Healthy Ageing paradigm by raising questions such as: what are the core concepts of the Life-Course Perspective paradigm in which policy-making should be framed in order to grant Active and Healthy Ageing for European Citizens? How do views from the Life-Course Perspective help to ensure that EU policies overcome the current understanding of ageing and demographic change as a problem to be solved? How to create effective strategies on how to bring about a positive economic impact?

SIforAGE project recommendation is to answer to the ageing challenge with one word, innovation. The Social Innovation Incubator developed by SIforAGE brings together a large number of stakeholders whose work is involved with AHA and provides them with opportunities to exchange ideas, to benefit from mutual collaboration across Europe, and to disseminate their results through five Knowledge Management Units (KMUs). The Social Innovation Incubator provides added value to research by drawing together well-established innovative experiences.

In addition to the training week, Ieva Stončikaitė also presented a paper at the VI International, Scientific and Practical Conference for Young Scientists and Students held in Riga, entitled “Time of challenges and opportunities: problems, solutions and prospects”. The conference placed the main focus on areas such as economics and finance; management and European studies; information and communication sciences; culturology, history, philology; cross-cultural communication and translation, among other topics. Ieva Stončikaitė’s paper was based on the presentation of the SIforAGE project and innovative solutions with sustainable impact to improve the life of older people. From the 4th of April until the 15th of April, the Espai “LaCaixa” Sagrada Família hosted the exhibition “A Full Life” by the GISME-UB photographer Ana Portnoy. It was inaugurated by her, Dr. Javier Tejada (director of GISME), Ander Errasti (SIforAGE project manager) and Jaume Soler (responsible of the Espai “LaCaixa” Sagrada Família) during a successful event that brought together people from different areas and countries to enjoy great examples of active and healthy ageing.

“These portraits belong to women and men who, after reaching the age of 70, are still living their life at its fullest” says Ana Portnoy. “They come from different fields but they all share the same attitude towards life, which is reflected in their clean and deep looks”. “I photographed them in their environment, with natural light, trying to capture with transparency the vital energy they transmitted me” finishes the photographer.

This exposition was just the first one of a series of exhibitions which will take place in different cities. The next one will be in September, at the Universitat de Lleida. During the following months, we will inform you about this next step.
